Breast Cancer – A Major Threat to Women

Breast cancer develops due to inevitable cell growth in the breast that attacks the tissues nearby and spreads all over the body. These collections of tissue are known as tumors. This does not mean all tumors are cancerous.

In Europe and North America large numbers of breast cancer has been diagnosed. In the millennium year about 200,000 breast cancer cases were reported alone in the United States. Every 1woman out of 8 has risk of this cancer development, but the risk of death from it is very low, hardly 1 out of 28.

Older women have greater chances of developing breast cancer. Women with a family breast cancer history or its previous history, women who has undergone a radiation therapy in the region of chest, women who began their menstruation earlier than 12 years old, women having menopause after age of 50, women who had never been pregnant or had child birth after 30 or older, or women with genetic mutation. Currently the genetic mutations for breast cancer are a hot subject of research.

The symptoms breast cancer tumor are as follows: changes in the breast's shape, lump or thickening that appears on the breast or underarm, inward turning of the nipple followed by discharge that is colorless, red, scaled skin, or ridges on the skin of breast.

If these symptoms are experienced by any woman, it does not prove she has breast cancer. In this circumstance, she must go for a breast cancer check-up. It is observed that 95% of breast cancer is diagnosed in personal check-ups. The personal check-up for breast cancer includes puckering the skin, lumps checking in the breasts after each period of menstrual, and nipple retraction or discharge checking.

There are many techniques to detect breast cancer like thermography, ultrasonography, computerized tomography scan mammography etc.

Breast cancer treatment include surgery for removal of cancerous tissues by breast conservation therapy (BCT). Radiotherapy, hormonal therapy chemotherapy, and biologic therapy are other treatments. A common treatment of breast cancer is Radiotherapy, and radiation, and chemotherapy treatment may follow surgery to ensure the cancer cells destruction.
